Honestly, the book really surprised me. Usually, books about dinosaurs are just cheesy monster mashups, but this one actually gets what real fieldwork feels like, the exhaustion of climbing down a massive cliff, the mud, and that constant worry about who is paying for your trip and what they want in return. What I loved most is that the dinosaurs aren't evil movie monsters, but are just wild animals doing their thing. There's this great scene where Rex is hiding in the ferns while a whole herd walks past, and you can practically smell the wet earth and feel the ground shaking. It felt totally real. It does rush through the beginning a bit though (one minute Rex is in his bedroom and the next he's practically jumping out of a plane) but once they hit the jungle, the pacing sets in nicely. It's just a really fun, smart read about what happens when humans stumble into a place they probably shouldn't be.
The book "Rex Ryder and the Lost Dinosaurs" is an amazing book for any child who loves adventure, science, history and especially dinosaurs. The author weaves an amazing story that will draw the young reader in and keep them excited throughout the entire book while also adding in real unexplored places on our planet and information about real dinosaurs that once existed through the use of historical facts and real science. One phrase from this book that truly stands out and which is something that all children should understand is – "The Greatest Adventures Begin With Curiosity". I look forward to reading more of the Rex Ryder adventures.
Rex Ryder is a soon to be 14 year old boy that loves adventure. Join him as he joins an expedition to explore a caldera (crater left after a Volcano erupts). As Rex and crew explore the caldera they discover some ancient creatures thought to be extinct. As they explore they discover that the caldera is not as dead as they assumed. The caldera becomes an active lava pit as they travel to safety. If you want to discover what ancient creatures he found, read this book to follow the adventure.
This is the third book in the series but you don't have to read the prior books to understand the story. There is only some brief mention of characters from the prior story. Rex is on another adventure that involves traveling to New Guinea to explore a hidden world in a volcano caldera. As always there is a crisis that puts the party of 5 at risk. Well written for the young adult audience who likes adventures.
I liked that this book mixed adventure with dinosaurs and kept the story moving. Rex's search for the lost dinosaurs had plenty of action, and I enjoyed seeing him solve problems along the way. It was an easy read that kept my attention, and I think kids who enjoy dinosaurs and adventure stories will have fun with it.
